What is the difinition of target heart rate and how do you calculate it?
I'm glad you asked because I just gave a seminar on the myth of the fat burning zone. Without going into the science of it, if you see something that says “fat burning zone” on a cardio machine, it's a myth!
So to answer your question…
Your target heart rate is a percentage of your maximal heart rate that you should be working out at during cardiovascular workouts. The American College of Sports Medicinie suggests you work out at 55%-90% of your heart rate max. A lower percentage is for less fit individuals and a higher percentage is for a more fit individuals.
Your maximal heart rate is approximately 220 – your age. You can get this checked out by wearing a heart rate monitor and running at your absolute hardest. It is the highest heart rate you can possibly achieve. Your max heart rate is independent of your fitness level and is based only on your age.
