Dutch museum charts human body – Yahoo! News

OEGSTGEEST, Netherlands – Strap on 3-D glasses and watch holograms of cartoon sperm sprinting to fertilize an egg. Climb inside a gigantic nose, enjoy the smell of fresh hay, then feel the wind blast on your neck when it sneezes. Walk across a bouncy rubber tongue complete with taste buds and realistic burping noises in the background.

This all might sound weird or flat-out gross. But the makers of “Corpus,” a new attraction in the Netherlands, are hoping that a combination amusement park and health education museum will encourage kids to take better care of their own bodies.

Even before Corpus officially opened March 20 in Oegstgeest, 21 miles southeast of Amsterdam, it was already a local landmark. The building incorporates a 115-foot high seated human figure into its structure. But the roughhewn Corpus exterior isn’t much to look at: all the detail is on the inside.

All the walls and halls are modeled with fiberglass to resemble the inside of a giant human body, giving visitors the sensation of being shrunk down to a tiny scale, like the characters of the classic science fiction film “Fantastic Voyage.”

Visitors begin their tour via an escalator that carries them through a wound in the giant figure’s calf. Once inside, they see an exhibition on what happens when a wood splinter pierces the skin.

Then it’s on to the sit-down “Uterus Theater.” That’s the one with the cartoon sperm race.

“We chose not to show sexual activity, but actually just the fertilization of the egg cell by the seed cell and how that develops” into a fetus, said Dr. Tom Voute, one of a raft of physicians hired as advisers on the project.

He said the information in Corpus is medically accurate, if not always highly sophisticated.

“I think that it gives information that will give people the itch to learn more,” he said.

When the show is over, the entire theater platform is lifted to the next floor with hydraulic pumps.

Next is a display on digestion, featuring blocks of cheese, the Dutch national treat. After visitors watch a video showing stomach acid dissolving them, the curds’ progress through a hallway-size intestinal system is charted with lights and narration.

While the cheese is heading downward, visitors progress up to exhibits on the heart, lungs, mouth, nose, and ear.

Visitors reach the summit in — where else? — the brain, where they take seats around a cluster of display panels built atop model neurons, which then project images onto a larger screen at the top of the domed space, to give an impression of how consciousness might work.

The project is the dream of businessman Henri Remmers, who arranged $31 million in private funding and won the endorsement of the Dutch Health Ministry. The cost of entry is $25.50 for adults, $21 for children under 14. Children younger than 8 are not permitted.

On the way back down, there are more displays on health and diet and games — for instance one where players attempt to knock out bacteria on a big screen display by tossing bean bags at them.

Other machines let visitors monitor their hearts while they exercise, or measure blood pressure, heart rate and body mass index.

Remmers said he hoped when people learn more about the “unique mechanism” that the human body is, “then you’ll have more respect for your own body, and possibly treat it a little more carefully.”

Be Healthy

Grand Master Helio Gracie, the father of Mixed Martial Arts known today as UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), died on January 29, 2009, at the age of 95 in his home in the hills of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

He was the founder of a new style of Jiu Jitsu based on leverage and tactics versus brutal strength and known today in the world as Gracie Jiu Jitsu that allow the small person with no strength to win against a much larger and stronger opponent..

I will not talk about his accomplishment as a fighter or martial artist but as the example of perfect health and fitness that passed away free of any form of disease and symptoms.

Many would state that it is genetic or maybe a matter of luck, but for those who had the pleasure to meet him … we know that this is not the case.

Grand Master Helio trained Jiu Jitsu and strength training all his life until his last day ( at 6 a.m. and at 93 years of age he was still doing his push ups and pull ups!!), he had an extremely positive attitude toward life, had a rigorous nutritional regimen ( never had a glass of wine in his life), went to sleep early every night and drank plenty of fresh water.

He was the living example of what I have been preaching for years to my clients, that health is not luck but something you build everyday through the choices you make in your lifestyle. I have seen many videos of Grand Master Helio but one especially caught my attention and it is vivid in my memory. He said: ” There are foods that might taste good but are not good for my health. I would never put anything inside my body that is not good for my health.” I am honored to have been chosen among many others as their nutritionist and strength and conditioning coach in the legendary Miami school to prepare their protigie. Today my affiliation with them goes beyond a solely professional collaboration and this is why I felt I had to write this blog as my own personal tribute to honor Grand Master Helio and the Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

The Secrets of Health and Vitality In my opinion today’s world of health and medicine does not make much sense because it studies sick people. I have been , for years, study what healthy people do in order to stay healthy and fit and I have read all po
1000
ssible books and talked to all the progressive doctors that I could.

Reading his book Grand Master Helio Gracie Diet , I have observed that the way of eating consists of a mixture of the tribes Masai of Africa and the Nukak of Colombia that he coined as the Gracie Diet.

When Mr. Gracie retired from fighting he went on to live with his family in the hills of Rio de Janeiro, initiating what today we know as an Organic Farm. His nutrition consisted of raw dairy, grass fed meats, fresh wild fish, lots of vegetables and exotic fruits.

He never had artificial sugars, alcohol, refined grain, processed foods, food that was not organic, sodas, etc, and he never used the microwave! … that is what most people do nowadays and not surprisingly at one point of their lives appear some sort of disease . People have never been so sick as in today’s times. We have 20 years old with diabetes, arthritis, poor libido etc. etc.. Our body is like a container and if we keep putting garbage, when full, disease or emotional/physical problems occur. The health approach of Grand Master Helio was based on: Positive Thinking

The way we think about ourselves and our thoughts affect our health and there are countless books with scientific evidence. I always do this exercise to make people understand this concept: I ask to describe the sensation of eating a mango while they close their eyes …..and as a reaction…. salivation occurs.

Mr. Gracie was such a positive person. The room where him and his wife were sleeping was the only part of the house that was not destroied. Instead of getting upset he was extremely happy because they were alive…..and that is how was Grand master Helio was for everything .

Breathing

Breathing is one of the most unused tools for optimal health. If we observed a baby we will notice that the way the newborn breath is different from the way we breath. We use the chest while they use the diaphragm.

All the internal practice such as Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Y Chuan, Pa Kua Chan, etc.. use the same principle as the baby would breath , that is why it is a very healthy practice. A person breath around 80 times per minute while a highly stressed person just 20 times. I always recommend my clients to practice one of those internal arts to learn to breath and relax, so forgotten in this society where most of us live to obtain material compensation. Hydration

Our body is made 80% of water, so if we drink 8 – 10 glasses a day we are probably in a state of dehydration and the body to compensate this state obtains the water from our organs. It does not sound too good right? The funny thing is that most of the people complain when I ask them to drink much more water, something that should be natural. In order to know how much water you should drink you should divide your body weight in 2 and that is the amount in Oz, you should be drinking ( plus one additional pint should be consumed during exercising also depending on your body weight and intensity. ) Nutrition

If you are a Carbo Type, the Gracie Diet would work very well for you but you should follow a nutrition based on your own bio chemistry. The way the body processes food is different for each single person.

Avoid processed foods, sodas, sports drink, concentrate fruit juices, caffeine, alcohol, all kind of sugars, flours, pasteurized milk, soy, grains and breads with gluten. Eat free range organic grass fed meats and eggs versus conventional . Consume wild fish, raw dairy, local organic vegetables and some fruits, organic nuts, oils and fats, Celtic Sea Salt instead of table salt and gluten free grain occasionally. Exercise

Chose the right form of exercise and avoid all those form that bit up your body like running for 1 hour, any form of low intensity cardio but do a sport, practice Gracie Jiu Jitsu if you like and lift free weights together with functional training methodologies. Avoid using standard weight training machin
1000
es. Remember you do not have to kill yourself, if you train too hard you will obtain the contrary effect, instead of having benefits you will over stress your body and burn out your adrenal glands creating hormonal and emotional imbalances. Sleep

Sleep is the more unused method of healing … most Americans do not sleep enough or go to bed too late. Nature has day and night for a reason. Before electricity, people used to go to sleep when it became dark but today people go to bed way after 10:00 pm and in most cases sleep 6 hours a night. Sleep deprivation had many consequences in our waist line and especially in our health. I’ll leave it to Dr. Mark Hayman , one of the most influenced specialist in functional medicine explain to you why sleep is so important. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sA9jw3Snt9Q

This is the formula to follow for a long a healthy life. You have the choice to be healthy or not taking the same steps of Grand Master Helio. I have chosen to be healthy as Grand Master Helio, I do not want to live visiting countless doctors’ offices, taking numerous pills, not been able to walk without the necessity of assistance. I want to be able to enjoy life until the end and be able to play and lift weights all my life and do whatever I want to do. You may enjoy the moment with comfortable food but you may regret one day what you did. Put down that donut, switch off the microwave and get something decent and nutritious to eat!

Ultimate Frisbee Is A Great Workout (sports, Whey Protein, And Weight Loss)

Ultimate Frisbee is no longer an extreme fringe sport that people would play during lunch breaks in high school. Ultimate Frisbee is considered one of the fastest growing sports in America. Why has there been such a sudden rise in participation in Ultimate Frisbee? Many believe it is due to the simplicity of the game. There is no need for officials as you call your own fouls during the game, and there isn’t a large amount of equipment to purchase, just buy a Frisbee and you are ready to play. The rules are very simple; you throw the Frisbee to another person on your team who then catches it and stops. Your teammate then must throw the Frisbee to another member of your team. This continues until you reach your end zone or you drop the Frisbee. If you drop the Frisbee, then the other team gets possession and they start passing towards their end zone. There isn’t suppose to be any physical contact to stop the receivers of the Frisbee, neither can you be on top of the person throwing the Frisbee (there is a three foot halo rule around the thrower).

Although the game is simple, the workout that you will receive is not. Ultimate Frisbee is a game of constant movement. You are always moving, whether it is getting open to get the Frisbee or if you are playing defense and trying to knock down a poor pass. This constant movement will give you a much better workout compared to basketball, tennis, football, or really any other sport that involves frequent stoppages in play. The constant movement will increase your heart rate.

During the time that you are exercising your heart rate functions as the best monitor of the workout that you are receiving. You want your heart rate to stay within certain zones while you are working out. If your heart is beating between 60-80% of your maximum heart rate, then you are in a good zone for burning fats. Your body doesn’t feel as if it should be burning the quick energy stores in order to have sufficient energy to complete the physical activity that it is doing. It will harness the fat stored in your body that takes longer for your body to break down into energy. If your heart rate is over 80% of maximum then you are in the cardio workout zone. This zone of your heart
1000
rate is excellent for increasing your endurance and for helping to create lean muscle. While you are playing Ultimate Frisbee you will find that you are nearly always in these two heart rate zones.

Just like other athletes, people that play Ultimate Frisbee should get the most out of the time that they play the sport. The best way to ensure that you get a complete workout is to have a good nutritional program. Adding protein to your diet is a good way to help your body build lean muscle. Lean muscle will help your body to burn more fat, and thus you will lose more weight. In addition lean muscle will also help you to perform better on the field. Immediately after working out it is a good idea to give your body a large dose of protein. A good way to get this protein is by taking a whey protein supplement. Whey protein is easy for your body to digest and it also give over 90% pure protein, which is higher than other protein mixtures.

Ultimate Frisbee is a new sport that is increasing in popularity. If you are looking for a fun sport to play, and a sport that will help you to get a good workout, then try Ultimate Frisbee.

Polar Wireless Heart Rate Monitors

Polar invented the first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor in 1977. Yes they did! It was made to assist the Finnish National Cross Country Ski team improve their performance.

In the 80s, ‘intensity training’ was all the craze. Go fast – go hard! Polar was there to monitor the intensity.

And the 90s ushered in not only those performance training focused individuals but also people who were seeking average fitness goals as well. They desired a heart rate monitor to keep track of their effort so as to squeeze the most out of each and every workout.

Today, Polar caters to the needs of heart rate training of those active individuals just starting an exercise regime to Olympic-caliber athletes. It’s this vast experience that attracts coaches, trainers and ordinary individuals across the globe to look to Polar for their heart monitoring needs. Polar has earned the name of designing and manufacturing the best instruments; they also are the front runners in educating on the benefits of heart rate based training.

Listening to what you’re body tells you while working out is one thing, but understanding what’s actually going on is a totally different matter. Polar understands this. To assist you, Polar has gained expertise in sports, physiology and electronics. They put it all together in specially designed models for your individual level of fitness.

Due to their long and successful history in the hear rate monitoring field, many athletes, and yearn-to-be athletes turn to Polar for their heart-measuring devices. Excellent choice!

The Polar FS1 heart rate monitor is made to easily and accurately measure your heart rate. It’s what you need if you’re wanting help in getting just the right intensity during your workout.

The FS1 is a basic heart rate monitor that also is equipped with a stopwatch, the time-of-day with extra-large digits for easy readability.

Train More Effectively With A Heart Rate Monitor

Today’s heart rate monitors have made it easier for athletes of all levels to get the same feedback they would get from a high-priced trainer. It’s like having a personal coach strapped to your wrist.

Until you get a heart rate monitor, you measure your effort by time or distance. With a heart rate monitor, however, you can now get a better indication of effort. And it comes from the heart. Literally. Your heart will tell you how hard you are exercising, how fit you are, and how you are recovering. Knowing these things will make you training more effective.

A heart rate monitor consists of a watch unit worn on the wrist and a chest transmitter strap. The watch can be worn as a regular sports watch, and when not connected to the transmitter strap, will still give you time of day, alarms, stopwatch functions, etc. The chest transmitter senses your heartbeat and constantly transmits that information to the watch.

There are some units that don’t use a chest strap. These normally measure the pulse when the user places two fingers on each of two buttons on the watch face. Pulse is a decent measurement, but does not give you the same level of continual information a chest strap will.

One of the first things you need to know when using a heart rate monitor is what your maximum heart rate is. The standard formula used is to subtract your age from 220. You can then calculate at what percentage of maximum you should be exercising at.

When doing cardiovascular training, research says exercising at 60-70% of your maximum heart rate will be best for fat loss and to build endurance, while exercising in the 70-80% of maximum range will increase your fitness.

There are a number of features available in modern heart rate monitors. Some are more useful than others. Of course, a constant measurement of heart rate is vital. It is helpful to be able to set zone alarms or otherwise be able to see where you are compared to your maximum heart rate. Some will do all the calculations for you, telling you when to ease up or to pour it on, depending on your workout for that day. Others will just show a heart rate number, and you will need to know what the upper and lower limits are for your workout.

It pays to shop around for the features you need, and not buy a lot of thi
1000
ngs you don’t need. Too many extra features may confuse you and discourage you from using your heart rate monitor regularly. That’s bad. It’s better to get something simple that you can commit to using regularly. Still, if you can handle it, there are some sweet features available.

Whatever heart rate monitor you choose, use it regularly. It will provide you so with much detailed information about your training; you’ll wonder what you ever did without it, and you’ll never want to be without one again.

The Race Trainer Timex Sports Watch. Timex Heart Rate Sports Features Just Got Better With Ant+

The Timex sports watch is traditionally regarded as an affordable, functional watch with support for the features athletes have asked for. Timex have now added a brand new heart rate watch to their Ironman collection that offers some great new features and fixes a few of the flaws of the legacy Ironman watches.

The Timex Race Trainer Heart Watch adds a new dimension to Timex’s already solid sports watch foundation with the inclusion of ANT+. ANT+ was first adapted in the Garmin Watches and has proven itself in countless wireless applications. Race Trainer interfaces with Timex’s new “Data XChanger”, a device that offers the advantages of ANT. With the Xchanger USB device, users can now upload their data from watch to PC without the need to plug anything in!

But Timex have not stopped there. Perhaps one of the most impressive things to come from the watch company is their online “Timex Trainer” community web portal. The Timex Trainer can import session data from the Race Trainer and other high-end Timex watches. Users can take advantage of online data tracking that allows logging of session history, customizable interfaces and connection to many other fitness-minded users that make up this rapidly growing Timex community on the web.

When you create a Free account at the portal, you immediately gain access to three specialized workout plans created by David Scott, who has won the Hawaiian Ironman Triathlon event and incredible six times!

Further workout plans can be purchase online and accessed immediately. These plans cater to a wide variety of fitness targets for athletes at a vast range of levels.

The watch itself features a combination of the watch features you expect in a Timex Ironman.

The wireless heart rate signals support a digital signal so as to avoid crosstalk and conflicts with other heart monitors and other types of exercise equipment. The new chest strap has been redesigned and is now a lot more comfortable than the straps found in older Ironmans.

With the ability to store 10 training sessions and a variety of data per session, the Race Trainer packs a lot of useful features for fitness enthusiasts and athletes alike. For each session Race Trai
1000
ner can store up to 50 lap times, average and maximum heart rate, calories burned and supports individual heart rate zones with alarms to inform you if you are in or out of your desired zone.

Many runners do variable lenght interval training, which is fully supported in the Race Trainer watch with 5 interval countdown timers. This watch can also measure heart rate recovery, another useful addition that athletes use to determine when they have recovered enough to do their next repetition.

To sum up. The Race Trainer running watch from Timex is a functional middle-of-the-range heart monitor watch with the power of ANT+, allowing this watch to transfer session data to personal computer and for those who wish to take the plunge… online!

For those looking for a more entry-level watch, Timex have also released a heart rate watch called the “Road Trainer”. While cheaper than the Race Trainer, Road Trainer lacks ANT+ data transfer, interval timers and multi-session storage making it more of a fitness watch than a runner’s watch. Still it features the same heart rate featues as found in the higher-level watch.

For maximum sports features, the Bodylink series watches are still Timex’s “flagship” offerings. Bodylink watch require the Timex Data Recorder for recording and transferring of session data and do not as yet facilitate wireless transfer. The Data Recorder must be purchased seperately and connects directly to PC via a USB port.

But if you want the maximum sport options, you currently have no choice, as Bodylink offers a great range of features, more data storage and provides the ability to track your speed and distance, all in excess of what the Road Trainer offers.

Five Features In A Runner’s Watch That You Can Apply To Your Training Today

The Lap Recall Feature

Athletes who do repetition work as part of their training need some way of recording their times, so as to have some record of their training performances for later comparison. Lap memory recall is the solution.

A basic sports wrist watch, keeps a running stop watch, which while handy for a single rep, loses your time once you reset the watch! The Lap Recall keeps a history of time that you can recall and analyze at a later date.

Countdown and Interval Timer Feature

The countdown timer simply counts down to zero from a specified number of minutes or seconds. Once it reaches zero, it will sounds an alarm and stop or sometimes repeat the countdown over and over. This feature can be useful when performing a timed repetition session, where you are running against the clock rather than over a specified distance.

A sequence of linked Interval Timers takes it one step further, by running a series of timers in succession, then optionally repeating the sequence. An interval timer is a good way to time your recovery as well as repetition time.

For instance you could set up your interval timer to countdown from 3 minutes down to zero (the repetition), then move to a 2 minute timer (the recovery) then repeat over as many times as you like.

Finish Time

Finish time is a feature offered in some Timex Ironman watches and is useful for competitive races or extended rep sessions in training.

The way it works is, say you are competing in a race or fun run and you’re aiming for a certain time. Simply enter your target time into your watch and the distance of the race, then as you pass each marker (either 1 k, or 1 mile) you press a button and the watch will display an estimated finishing time.

The feature is useful if you are trying to run a personal best time and want to stay on track, the downside is you have to manually press a button at each marker (a task easily forgotten about in the middle of a competitive race).

Heart Rate Zones

The heart rate zone feature applies to watches that support a heart rate monitor. It enables you to set up an acceptable upper and lower limit for an exercise session. When you perform the session, your watch will mo
1000
nitor your heart rate signals, and alert you if your heart rate falls out-of-bounds. Many heart rate monitors will also record how much time you spent “in the zone”.

For example a long slow run will usually get your heart rate to about 60-70% of your maximum, so say your maximum heart rate is 192 beats per minute, your heart rate zone will then be 139-152 bpm. If your heart beat falls outside of this range an alarm will be triggered.

Speed & Distance Tracking

Whether on long run, in a competitive race or a rep session, it can be extremely useful for a runner to be aware of their current speed, pace and just how far you traveled in a given time. Speed and distance tracking is becoming more common in sports watches today and there are various technologies that enable real-time speed and distance information to be displayed to the user.

The cheapest and most inaccurate of these is a pedometer mechanism that keeps track of your number of steps, then calculates speed and distance statistics based on your stride length.

A similar, more accurate mechanism (when correctly calibrated) is a foot pod unit, which is an external device that clips into your running shoe and transmits a signal back to the wrist watch. The foot pod calculates speed and distance information based on the actual motion of your legs through the air.

The most accurate (and expensive) measurement of speed and distance is GPS tracking. GPS sports watches come in two basic types: internal one-piece units or a 2-piece device, where the GPS unit attaches externally to your body, transmitting wirelessly to the wristwatch unit.

GPS tracking watches calculate speed and distance based on signals broadcast by a network of satellites orbiting the earth. By locking onto three or more satellites, your location on earth can be measured to a high degree of accuracy and your speed and distance calculated from subtle changes in your location.

A common problem with GPS tracking watches, however is that they require an unobstructed view of the sky, making them ineffective around tall building or trees, an issue a foot pod overcomes.

Advice on which heart rate monitor to buy for my daughter?

I would like to buy a heart rate monitor watch for my daughter. It needs to display the heart rate and the stopwatch readout at the SAME time (2 lines) so that she can look at her time while she is running. I would like one that is not too large. I bought her one, but I got it on Ebay, and when it arrived it turned out to be quite large. I'd like to spend less than $100.

If you would like to give advice on units to avoid, that would be welcome also.

I did almost bid on the Polar S120, but I think it might be pretty big.

Thanks for your help.

Buy what you can afford and need. Polar makes some of the best heart rate monitors out there that also include cyclometer features such as speed, cadence, and even power meter functions.

Ciclosport also makes a heart rate monitor that includes the cyclometer functions, but no power meter functionality.

If you really have the serious bling, you could go for an SRM powermeter. That will have the cyclometer, power meter, and heart rate all wrapped up into one. It's also the choice of most pros out there.

How Garmin Gps Watch Models Differ

The Garmin Forerunner GPS watches are without doubt, the most advanced GPS sports watches on the market today.

By linking to a network of satellites, the Forerunner watches can accurately measure speed, pace, distance and elevation above sea level. Garmin’s unique approach intertwines the power of GPS, with advanced and practical sports watch features that let you measure and recording sports performances in an intelligent and intuitive way.

But what are the similarities between the six Forerunner watches on the market? and more importantly, what are the differences?

Two Generations of Forerunners

For the purposes of this discussion, we consider two “generations” of Forerunner watches. The “older generation” includes model numbers: 101, 201 and 301, which have now been superseded by the 205, 305 and 405 models – the “current generation”.

How Forerunner Watches are Similar

All Garmin Forerunner watches are all-in-one GPS wrist units, meaning the GPS aerial is mounted in the watch.

This is quite distinct from other GPS watch manufacturers such as Timex, Suunto and Polar, who require you to secure an external GPS device to your body. With Forerunner watches, you can just put the watch on your wrist and you’re ready to go.

The Garmin watches also share some amazing proprietary sports watch features. Some are only found in certain models, but most are present in all Forerunner watches. Below is a summary these shared features:

Virtual Partner Feature
The Virtual Partner feature lets you train against a digital person, displaying if your virtual “competitor” is “ahead” or “behind” you.

Auto Pause/Auto Resume
Pauses and resumes the stopwatch time based on your speed. If you need to stop running at a traffic light for instance, the watch stops the stopwatch timer automatically.

Auto Lap
Similarly to Auto Pause, the Auto Lap features automatically records your current “lap” and starts a new one when you have run a specified distance.

Simple Workouts
Lets you input time, distance and calorie goals and workout against them.

Pace/Speed Alert
Triggers an alarm if you vary from preset pace. You can set “Faster than” pace alerts and “Slower than” pace alerts.

Time/distance Alert
Trigge
1000
rs alarm when you reach a certain time or certain distance. The alerts can be set to trigger once, or repeat over and over.

Interval Training
Lets you set up exercise and rest intervals. Intervals are flexible and can be set to distances or times.

Customizable Screen(s)
The Forerunner watches display a variety of real-time data as you are performing a workout and allow you to set up customized screens.

The Differences

Now we will explore the differences in the Forerunner watches, both in terms of the differences between “generations” as well as how individual watch models within generations differ.

Older Vs Current Generation Differences

Chipset
The major difference between generations is the GPS chipset. Put simply, the current generation of watches are far superior at picking up the GPS signal, drop the signal less frequently and are more reliable in terms of accuracy than the older generation watches.

Memory Storage
Surprisingly, the older watches store an incredible 5000 laps in their memory, whereas their modern counterparts can record “only” 1000 laps.

Features
The current generation Forerunners support the Courses feature (that lets you compete against previous workouts). The older generation does not.

Simultaneous Data Fields
The older generation Forerunner watches all display three real-time data fields. The 205 and 305 watches display four. The 405 has a smaller screen and only displays 3 however.

How “Older Generation” Watch Models Differ

The 101, 201 and 301 watches all look very similar, but there are some large distinctions between them.

Heart Rate Monitor
The 301 is the only older generation Forerunner watch that supports a heart rate monitor strap.

PC Connectivity and Data Transfer
The 101 does not support PC data transfer, the 201 connects to PC via a serial port, whereas the 301 connects via USB

Power Supply
The 101 uses 2 AAA batteries to power the GPS signal. The 201 and 301 both use internal, rechargeable batteries.

Features
Only the 301 supports “advanced workouts”, “sports profiles” and “auto scroll”.

Note:

Advanced Workouts allow you to create custom goal-oriented workouts.
Sports Profiles are workout modes that cater specifically to the type of sport you are doing (running, biking and “other sports”)
Auto Scroll is a feature that cycles through data pages in real time.

How “Current Generation” Watch Models Differ

Now we look at the current generation, from the older 205 and 305 units to the recently released 405.

Heart Rate Monitor and External Devices
The 305 and 405 support a HRM and optional foot pod devices, the 205 does not.

PC Connectivity and Data Transfer
All watches support data transfer via USB, but the 405 transmits wirelessly to an ANT USB stick.

Looks and Form Factor
The 205 and 305 look identical (besides their color). They are large, bulky and rectangular shaped face. The 405 looks more like a real watch.

Simultaneous Data Fields
The 205 and 305 display 4 data fields, the 405 displays 3.

Map Navigation
The Forerunner 205 and 305 support GPS navigation features. The 405 does not.

Touch-Sensitive Bezel
The 405 can be controlled by tapping a bezel – a “ring” around the watch face. The 205 and 305 do not.

The latest Forerunner watches offer better signal reception and a few more modern features than the older generation models, but as you have seen the watches still deliver a lot of bang for your buck and are generally much cheaper.

Cardiovascular Exercise And Diabetes

Cardiovascular, or cardio, training involves exercise in which a person’s heart rate increases to a higher than normal rate. This type of workout, also called aerobic exercise, can be especially beneficial for people with diabetes because it can help burn extra glucose in the body and also decrease resistance to insulin.

A good cardio exercise routine has many positive health effects, such as:

•Improving muscle strength
•Reducing body fat
•Increasing energy levels
•Lowering blood pressure
•Increasing the level of good cholesterol
•Decreasing the risk of coronary artery disease
•Strengthening the heart
•Improving control of blood sugar levels
•Improving circulation
The most important aspect of a cardio routine can also be the most difficult to achieve, that is, regularity. The maximum benefits of cardio training are realized when someone exercises on most days of the week. This is because the effects of the exercise aren’t permanent, although they are accumulative. For instance, research from Duke University suggests that when the exercise is done regularly for the long term, then it can significantly help the body process blood sugar levels, but if the exercise is only done once, then the effects only last for approximately one day.

Concerns for People with Diabetes
As always, people with diabetes should keep their healthcare providers well informed of anything that can affect their health. Exercise, especially, falls into this category. Talk to your doctor about what kind of exercise is best for you, and be sure to discuss any questions or concerns that arise as your exercise program progresses.
People with diabetes need to pay particular attention to their feet during exercise. The American Diabetes Association suggests using silica gel or air midsoles as well as polyester or cotton-polyester socks to prevent blisters and keep the feet dry.

A Cardio Training Program
A cardio training program aims to increase breathing capacity and improve overall health. Cardio work gets the heart beating faster, is rhythmic, and involves the large muscle groups, such as those in the legs. Generally, the program will start at a certain level, and then it will increase gradually as endurance is built.
Many types of physi
1000
cal activity can be categorized as cardio exercise, including:

•Jogging or running
•Walking or hiking
•Bicycling
•Using a stair step or elliptical machine
•Cross-country skiing
•Rowing
•Dancing
•Swimming
How a person structures his or her exercise program will depend on individual variables related to overall health and current fitness level. Because people with diabetes often have complicated health concerns, it’s very important to talk with a doctor or healthcare provider before beginning a cardio training regimen.
Many cardio exercise programs will specify how often, how long, and how hard a person should exercise. Often the workout will involve short periods of intense activity, followed by periods of lower-intensity exercise. A healthcare team can help determine the best workout for an individual. Personal trainers are also helpful for setting up a program, and many gyms provide this service.

Achieving and maintaining a higher-than-normal heart rate is the basic goal of a cardiovascular workout. Different people have different “target” heart rates and will want to maintain those rates for different lengths of time. Heart-rate monitors can help determine measurements, or there are other ways to tell when an optimal exercise level has been reached. A doctor or healthcare provider can help with these determinations.

Elements of a Cardio Workout
There are four phases to an aerobic workout:
Phase 1: Warm up (5-10 minutes): The goal is to get the heart rate up to about 50 to 60% of the target rate.

Phase 2: Stretching (5-10 minutes): Stretching the muscles helps avoid injury and prepares them for more rigorous activity.

Phase 3: Activity (30-40 minutes): This is the main exercise. Times will vary depending on fitness level.

Phase 4: Cool down (5-10 minutes): The period during which the heart rate gradually resumes its normal level.

At Home or in a Gym?
Once the doctor gives the OK to begin cardio training, it’s time to explore different exercise options. It might be easier to begin at a gym where the staff can explain cardio exercise machines and help develop a program that it suitable for an individual’s needs.
When joining a gym, ask some questions first. Find out whether the staff is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine. Ask what experience they have in working with clients who have diabetes. Also, see if the gym offers a trial membership. Many gyms offer a free day or a free week or more to try out their facility.

For some people, however, it will be just as easy to work alone. Jogging and walking are good individual aerobic exercises. Exercising with a partner can help if motivation begins to fade.

Getting More Information
The best place to get more information about cardio workouts is by talking to your healthcare team. Ask them what kind of exercise and at what intensity would be best for your individual needs.
People new to aerobic activity might find it helpful to take a look at About.com’s “Cardio for Beginners” or consider working with a personal trainer or physical therapist at first. These professionals can help you learn the basic principles of the activity, determine and monitor your target heart rate, and develop an overall plan.

Retail: $300

Street Price: Much Less

Of all the Timex Bodylink / Ironman heart rate monitors the Timex Ironman 5F011 is the one that most suits athletes – fitness enthusiasts. Runners, Cyclists, Skiers, Rowers, Triathletes, Hikers, etc, will all benefit from the inclusion of 8x (eight) heart rate training zones and 4 x interlinked countdown timers (for intervals), with additional warm up and cool down timers. Optionally, if used with the new 3D GPS unit (included) , the Timex 5F011 can provide both vertical and horizontal performance data including altitude, speed, distance, and predicted finish time.

Heart rate was 100% accurate even while running next to others wearing other units. Polar, Suunto, other Timex, Freestyle, did not affect this monitor at all.

The GPS unit took a few minutes to lock in and dropped a couple of times during the test run, but overall performed better than my $600 Suunto. I expected that as all of them have that problem on the first run, and on the second test run, in locked in quicker.

Timex has it all together in this great modular unit. They have added multi heart rate zone training, interval sessions and 3D functionality. A combination of heart rate zones, optional speed / pace zones, auto-lapping, time based intervals plus Finish Time Predictor (when using GPS 3D unit) make this unit truly universal for all outdoor sports. For fitness training, the best new feature is the FINISH TIME predictor. You tell it you are running (or cycling) a 10K (or miles) , it works out your finish time based on current speed and distance travelled so far. This is continually updated while you run to help you achieve your Personal Best. Something we all want every run.

With the addition of the 5G751 Data Recorder 2 and view your workout over a map using gpsvisualizer.com or other online mapping software to actually see how hard your heart was pumping up that hill, etc.. Its an additional tool thats worth purchasing if you are serious, retails at $75, can find online for less.

The book took a while to digest as this unit is FULL of features and customizable options. Three manuals come with it and I’d recommend tinkering with it before you go out and try to run a very important event. Sure, one of the manuals is how to put on the chest strap and the other is about the GPS sensor, but Its worth the time to go over then manuals, as theres a lot of nice features that aren’t obvious in the beginning. Everything thats full of options come with manuals, so I don’t consider that a negative, but to some it could be daunting. Sure, you can just put it on and run, but that would be like taking a Ferrari out and keeping it in 1st gear.

Pros: Timex, Size, features. Price per feature when compared to other manufacturers.

Cons: GPS lock in speed, three manuals. Please note GPS lock in was faster the second and third times I used the monitor.

Summary: If you are a serious athlete, wanting a serious tool for training and don’t mind read the book once or twice – this is the tool for you.

Overall: 4.8 of 5 Stars.

Fitness Level evaluation. Fitness Test evaluates your current fitness level. What does that mean? Your fitness level means your body’s ability to withstand a physical workload (how much) and to recover in a timely manner. In everyday life you can see how some people can easily run several miles, while others can’t walk for more than 10 minutes. The difference in these people is in their fitness level.

Fitness test – old methods. There are number of tests that can be used to supposedly determine fitness level. These tests are based on BMI, Weight, Resting Heart Rate, VO2 Max, just a number of push-ups… However, these tests are either expensive or/and inaccurate for some simple reasons. It is very difficult to develop standards based on a test time interval just because the number of sit ups, push-ups and their accuracy varies a lot during the test. In addition, heart rate measures after exercise are difficult to make accurately, you have to use a comprehensive heart rate monitor during the test. Anyway, these methods were created a long time ago, when computer did not exist yet, therefore should be excused for their inaccuracy.

Fitness test – newest, the most accurate, methods. What are the most effective and accurate methods in assessing fitness level today? Health Reviser’s Fitness Test is based on the one of the most accurate methods of fitness assessment. Computer diagnoses the autonomic nervous system response on a simple standup maneuver. The standup maneuver causes heart rate to rise within the first 10-15 seconds because blood pressure drops due to gravitational redistribution of the blood mass. Then the cardiovascular system attempts to compensate an orthostatic effect of standing up by constricting peripheral blood vessels. As a result blood pressure returns to its normal level and heart rate drops. Athlete body reaction is fast and strong, while sedentary lifestyle makes body react with a delay and a little amplitude. This serves as a base of determining a fitness level.

Fitness test – newest assessment from scientists. Fitness Test from Health Reviser was created by a group of scientists from USA, Europe, Russia, Japan and some other countries. Their research was based on a vast amount of fitness tests on volunteers of different ages and gender starting from people who never exercised and ending up w
1000
ith a national Olympic team. This research data allowed development of a unique algorithm of fitness assessment. This algorithm represents one’s fitness level on two different scales – absolute, where user’s results are compared with a full-range of individuals, another scale is age- and gender-related. The absolute scale compares your fitness level with beginners and top athletes of all ages and gender. If you are competitive, this is exactly what you need. Try to get the highest score and beat a national sport team. At the same time this is not a very good scale for beginners and seniors. At certain age it is very difficult, for even well trained body, to compete with 18 y.o. individuals because of body’s physiology (and in most cases it’s not a good idea). However, when you switch to the age-related scale, you can always get an excellent fitness score; and your goal would probably be to keep it for as long as possible.

So, do not wait. Perform your

If you are a bike rider, distance runner, lap swimmer, or an athlete in any sport that requires fitness then realizing how to apply pacing data is crucial to the perfection of your tempo and performance. A GPS heart rate monitor in combination with other measurement devices, like watts meters and speed and cadence sensors for bicyclists, provides you a ample variety of measurements to use.

In the end it is all about locating your lactic acid limit in relation to tempo, distance, and time. Churn out too much lactic acid in the muscle fibers too early on and you can’t keep the speed, so knowing exactly where your body can operate for long periods without making too much lactic acid is a good tool to grow velocity.

Measuring Lactate Threshold

While not many individuals possess the measurement equipment to compute their authentic lactate threshold, there are methods that provide close approximations. Using an all-out 30 minute exercise period in the sport of your selection is one way to calculate this.

This trial is only recommended to well trained athletes and ought to not be pursued by somebody who has not put in sizeable conditioning and miles. The purpose is to scrutinize your heart beats per minute while working out at the highest feasible level of exertion. Your arithmetic mean heart beats per minute for the period of the last 20 minutes ought to be close to to your lactic threshold.

The 30 Minute Measurement For Measuring Lactic Threshol

You can complete this trial by running, bicycling, swimming or participating in an alternative aerobic event that can be kept up for a 30 minute period of time. You will need to have a heart rate monitor and a method to access the measurements. For the most part heart rate monitors with the capacity to transmit the measurements to a PC should do – Garmin, Polar and a lot of of the other sophisticated monitors figure out a lot of this routinely.

To get underway warm up for 15 minutes for the reason that this is a max speed exertion. Go at a moderate pace for the opening 10 minutes.

For the duration of the final 20 minutes where you are at greatest sustained speed write down your heart rate and determine arithmetic mean heart rate for the 20 minute phase. This arithmetic mean heart rate is your constant heart rate at your Lactic Threshold. Most good watches automatically calculate this.

Making Use of the measurements to advance Athletic Performance

Through continued base exercise and the utilization of training days at 95% to 105% of your Lactic Threshold heart beats per minute you can build up your capacity to maintain longer and more difficult efforts. Twice a week do a 20 to 30 minute greatest output or you can pursue shorter durations of 5 minutes on and 5 minutes off with numerous repetitions.

Over time you ought to begin to see change for the better in your capacity to perform at an advanced heart rate and to recuperate more rapidly.

At Heart Rate Watch Company our mission is helping people manage healthier, more energetic lifestyles. That is what I like about our mission – we only do business with committed people. We sell heart rate monitor watches and home gym machine online and I know that each time somebody purchases one of our gyms they are making both a mental and a economic obligation to a healthier life.
